Councils & Committees

OSHP provides leadership, education, and professional services, but our greatest impact comes from the strength of our members. The Society depends on your ideas, experience, and energy to support the growth and advancement of pharmacy practice across Oregon. Together, we move the profession forward and turn ideas into action.

OSHP’s councils and committees are where that work comes to life. Through volunteer leadership and collaboration, these groups guide educational programming, strengthen member engagement, address professional practice issues, and support the Society’s strategic priorities.

Three primary councils carry out the annual goals of the Society: the Educational Affairs Council, the Membership Council, and the Professional Relations Council. Under these councils are active committees that focus on key initiatives. The Annual Seminar Committee plans and delivers OSHP’s premier educational event each year. The Legal and Regulatory Affairs Committee (LRAC) monitors and reviews legislation and regulatory changes impacting public health and pharmacy practice. The Industrial Relations Committee (IRC) supports engagement with industry partners and helps strengthen professional relationships that benefit the Society and its members.

Each council and committee offers meaningful opportunities to contribute, lead, and connect with fellow members. If you are interested in participating or would like to learn more, we can connect you with the appropriate Council Chair to answer questions and invite you to an upcoming meeting.

OSHP Councils

Educational Affairs Council (EAC)

The primary responsibility of the Education Affairs Council (EAC) is to serve as an oversight committee for the provision of continuing education programming to the OSHP membership. One of its largest tasks is planning the OSHP Fall Seminar, a one day continuing education seminar held every fall in the Portland area. A sub-committee of the EAC, the Annual Seminar Committee is charged with planning the OSHP Annual Seminar, a three day continuing education seminar held each spring. EAC maintains a database of presentation topics and speakers from all of the OSHP-sponsored continuing education events. In the spring, EAC reviews the OSHP scholarship application submissions. The scholarship awards are announced at the OSHP Annual Seminar. Funding for the OSHP scholarships is provided through the Silent Auction fundraiser along with donations given during the OSHP Annual Seminar each spring.

EAC Meetings
EAC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. If you are interested in becoming involved with the EAC, please contact the OSHP Office.

OSHP Scholarship Program
The OSHP Scholarship award was established to promote personal and professional development and to celebrate the contributions and achievements of student pharmacists. Through the award, students are recognized for their outstanding leadership abilities, community service and outstanding accomplishments.

OSHP solicits applications for the OSHP Scholarship each spring. Scholarships are offered to students who are currently enrolled in a pharmacy degree program and are either a Pharmacy Student Society member (which includes OSHP) or an OSHP member. Only students who will be full-time pharmacy students during the next academic year are eligible. Each year, several scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic performance, health care-related work experience, involvement in leadership activities, and community service.

Membership Council

The Membership Council focuses on ideas to grow, engage and maintain the membership of OSHP. The council includes representation from OSHP Chapters (Northern, Southern, Student and Technician) and seeks to support the needs of members through coordinated programming and events. Through the development of Sections, the Council has created networks for pharmacists, technicians, students and industry members throughout the state to share ideas and experiences.

Professional Relations Council (PRC)

The Council on Professional Relations is responsible for professional and scientific matters including the development and improvement of the professional practice of pharmacy in hospitals and related institutions, the development of standards, guides and related materials, and cooperation with allied organizations and agencies. With its subcommittees of Newsletter and Legal & Regulatory Affairs, PRC extends is responsibilities to include public outreach and support, improving communication within the Society and between its partners, and reviewing and interpreting proposed legislation and current law changes that affect public health and pharmacy practice.

The PRC collaborates on a variety of projects for OSHP. Recent and ongoing efforts include:

Promote National Pharmacy Week and National Poison Prevention Month
Facilitate uptake and completion of ASHP Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative Hospital Self-Assessment (PPMI HSA) bench marking across all Oregon hospitals
Schedule coordinated health promotion/pharmacy outreach events in which OSHP members routinely participate, in collaboration with and support of the Oregon State College of Pharmacy and Pacific School of Pharmacy Student Chapters affiliated with OSHP
Website development and continuous improvement of content
Investigation and development of social media as part of OSHP’s communications strategy
Production of the monthly Newsbriefs
Coordination of legislation activities with the Oregon Pharmacy Coalition
Social event planning
Other activities at the request of the Board

OSHP Committees

Annual Seminar

The Annual Seminar is a weekend-long event held each spring in late April, offering at least 15 hours of continuing education (CE) for pharmacists and technicians. The CE sessions cover a wide range of topics, including pharmacy management, leadership, student precepting methods, clinical practices, and law updates. Dedicated programming is also available for pharmacy technicians and students. The event features poster presentations, where members can showcase their research findings to colleagues statewide. Attendees can also connect with over 30 pharmaceutical industry partners at the Industry Exhibition. Beyond education, the seminar is designed to foster professional networking and fun. Participants are encouraged to join the Welcome Reception, attend the Awards Celebration, or take part in the Gary Claussen Memorial Run (walkers welcome!).

Industry Relations Committee (IRC)

The Industry Relations Committee (IRC) is a subcommittee of the Membership Council and serves to develop the partnership between OSHP’s pharmacist-members and its pharmaceutical industry partner-members. The IRC is responsible for continuing to enhance program development which benefit business practices for all. OSHP acknowledges that its continuing education programming could not be delivered if it were not for the assistance of our industry partners. The IRC has also instituted programming at past Annual Seminars which provided an overview of the PhRMA Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals, explored company participation with healthcare provider understanding of the Codes, and how pharmacy leaders involved in formulary management can build and maintain opportunities for partnering relationships.

Legal & Regulatory Affairs Committee (LRAC)

Legal and Regulatory Affairs is responsible for review and interpretation of proposed legislation and actual changes in laws, rules and regulations affecting public health, pharmacy and hospital pharmacy practice and for interpretation and application of state Society principles and ethics.

LRAC works on a variety of projects for OSHP. Some responsibilities and recent examples of LRAC activities are:

Coordinate and prioritize goals and objectives for the upcoming legislative year.
Participate in the interpretation of proposed legislation and testify at the State Capital as indicated.
Coordinate with the lobbyist on all activities related to public policy and legislation.
Serve as OSHP representatives to the Oregon Pharmacy Coalition.
Provide input on formation of Political Action Committee Board of Trustees and fundraising plan.
